Cattle Parasites Flashcards
What are common parasite problems for 1st and 2rd calf heifers?
Cryptosprodium, coccidia, lice, trichostrongyles, face flies, horn flies, ticks
What are common parasite problems for cows?
face flies, horn flies, tick, lice
What are common parasite problems for bulls?
face flies, horn flies, lice
What are some problems that look like parasites but are not?
Poor doers
Coppper deficiency, fescue toxicosis, ostertagioasis
What are some common bovine parasites?
haemonchus controtus, ostertagious, trichostrongylous, strongylds, cooperia, cryptosporidium
What do we use fecal egg count for in cattle?
anthelmintic efficacy evaluation
How are eggs of trichostrongyles passed?
In manure (5-7 days to get to L3) , cooler is longer, adult lay eggs in 3 weeks, survive on pasture while
Ostertagia, cooperia
Where do cooperia like to be and are they pathogenic?
Small intestines, not highly pathogenic , many egg in young cattle poop
Need high level macrolide to kill
What are some clinical observations of trichostrongyles?
Diarrhea, weight loss, unthriftiness, hypoproteinemia
What 3 drug groups commonly used to deworm?
Macrocylclic lactones, benzimidasoles and nicotinics
Is there drug resistance in cattle?
Yes, hard to see as much (pour on more cause subtherapeutic dose)
What sector of the bovine industry is worst at refugia and has worst resistant and parasite load?
Cow-calf (pour on and out in field)
How do you test to see the efficacy of our dewormers?
Fecal Egg Count Reduction Test (should be 90% to work)
When do you perform a FECRT?
Wait appropriate period of when drug should work - 14-17 day maco, 17-21 moxi, 10-14 levamisole
How do we manage resistant parasites?
use 2-3 drugs from different drug groups, don’t mix give separate
