How do you examine and animal to find a mass?
Visual exam (exudate and location), palpation (moveable, attached, soft or firm, crepitus), non-invasive (ultrasound or x-ray) and Invasive (fine needle aspirate)
What are your differentials for an abdominal mass?
Hernia, Hemorrhage, Abscess, Tumor
Should you lance a hematoma?
No! Bleed out! Cold hose and leave alone
How do you properly lance and abscess?
Ultrasound to confirm not intestines or hematoma
Then cut a slit (T or X shapped) to lance
Wear gloves and use a clean scapple blade with handle
What are some differentials for a calf with a spot by its umbilicus? Where else to calves like to get abscess?
Abscess or hernia
Ultrasound to check!
Under the jaw when they cut neck on wire while getting milk from bucket
What is another lump differential that comes into play near the neck, or shoulder?
Vaccine reaction
If you perform a fine needle aspirate and get back a cheesy looking or yellow discharge, what do you have?
Abscess

H - heart
A - abomasum
U - uterus
L - lungs
S - spine
What are your differentials for a mass on the mandible of an adult animal?
Lumpy Jaw - Actinomyces Bovid
Abscess
Wooden Tongue - Actinobacillus Lingeresii
What are small round/pedunculated lesions on youngstock?
Papilloma’s/warts
- Go away with time
What is a round tumor on youngstock with a light outside and dark red center?
Melanoma - ulcerated, moveable, non-painful, firmness of testivle - not metastatic and can remove sterile with surgery
Differentials for bull swollen near prepuce?
Broken Penis - hematoma
Water Belly - urine tracking down scrotum due to ureter with urolith
What is a rare cancer in cattle but can occur (common in boxer)?
Mast cell tumor (mammary tissue)
What are differentials for a small mass on the mandible of a small ruminant?
Caseous Lymphadenitis
Abscess
FNA only for culture to be sure - open spread all over so be careful bc highly contagious
What is a common location for squamous cell carcinoma in female small ruminants?
Vulva
