What are some of the differences between field necropsy and diagnostic lab necropsies?

A

On farm, less bio secure (keep away from other animals and know your samples may not be pure), will not have as many instruments, try to sample as clean as possible, need to have an area to dispose of it and will need to know what samples to take, store and submit

What are some things that are critical to getting the necropsy response you want?

A

Collecting and submitting a good history, collect health first then sick or dead, make sure you wear protection, prelabel bags, plan for disposal and disinfection

A

What are some good procedures to follow when necropsying?

A

Collect blood before euthanizing
Lay on same side and direction, do external exam first, fresh and sterile samples first, be systematic, breadloaf thick organs, open tubular organs, 3-6cm or startburst sized, record findings (location)
