Skin Infections: HPV and Molluscum Flashcards
molluscum morphology and clinical features
• Morphology: Umbilicated papule
• Clinical Features: With the eradication of smallpox, molluscum contagiosum (MC)
became the only remaining poxvirus infection to specifically afflict humans.MC is a common, self-limited condition in children. It also occurs in adults, usually as a sexually transmitted disease, and has been observed with increasing frequency in immunocompromised hosts, most notably HIV-infected individuals.
normally, treatment of MC is deferred and they clear up over time, but what therapeutic options can be done?
Therapeutic options include curettage, manual expression, cryotherapy, chemovesicants, and topical agents such as keratolytics, imiquimod and cidofovir
what part of the body would you see MC
MC lesions are firm, umbilicated, pearly papules with a waxy surface. They can occur anywhere on the skin surface but are most common in skin folds.
An eczematous reaction around lesions of MC can be seen, usually in children with underlying ___ ___.
An eczematous reaction around lesions of MC can be seen, usually in children with underlying atopic dermatitis.
morphology and clinical features of HPV
• Morphology: Papule, plaque; Sometimes called verrucous papule
• Clinical Features: Common warts are hyperkeratotic, exophytic, dome-shaped
papules or plaques most frequently located on the fingers and dorsal surfaces of the hands. Extensive chronic verrucosis that is notoriously resistant to therapy has been
observed in immunocompromised individuals and, at times, in patients with no apparent immune dysfunction.
why do black dots appear in HPV?
Characteristic features of common warts are punctate black dots representing thrombosed capillaries.
_____ and ____ warts appear as thick, ____ papules on the palms, soles, and lateral aspects of the hands and feet, with gently sloping sides and a central depression resembling an anthill.
Palmar and plantar warts appear as thick, endophytic papules on the palms, soles, and lateral aspects of the hands and feet, with gently sloping sides and a central depression resembling an anthill.
where are you most likely to find flat-topped papule HPV clusters?
Flat warts are skin-colored or pinkish to brown, relatively smooth-surfaced, slightly elevated, flat-topped papules that are most commonly located on the dorsal hands, arms or face.
treatment of HPV
There is currently no specific antiviral therapy available to cure HPV infection. Existing modalities focus primarily on the destruction or removal of visible lesions or induction of cytotoxicity against infected cells. Cryotherapy is probably the most common modality employed in the treatment of HPV infections.
Because of the benign and self-limited nature of warts, treatments that because scarring should be avoided. There is no evidence that aggressive treatment results in a better long- term outcome, and no therapy is an option, as common warts often regress spontaneously in children.
molluscum
- commonly self limited
- increased in immunocompormised hosts
- umbilicated and firm
- common in skin folds

multiple conditions going on here
eczematous reaction around molluscum. this kid probs has atopic dermatitis too
