Skin Infections: Herpes Flashcards
primary, secondary morphology of varicella zoster. complications of this disease?
chicken pox is acute viral illness secondary to exposure to HSV3
- symptoms: fever, malaise, myalgia and eruption or erythemetous papules
primary: vesicle, pustule
2nd: crust, erosion (partially due to tiching)
complications: remains dormant in nerve ganglia and can arise as shingles
varicella
definition, morphology, mangement
shingles (herpes Zoster)
- reactivation of dormant varicella from a nerve ending, affects a dermatome
- pain common
- morphology: clustered vesicles (herpetiform) that follow the dermatomes.
- management: early treatment with antivirals
what is “herpetiform”
description for clustered vesicles
what is going on in this shingles case
singles looks differnet on the face. this shingles episode is affecting the first branch of the trigeminal nerve. needs and optho consultation
definition
primary and secodnary morphology
management
definition: HSV (could be genital (type 2) or oral type 1)
primary: grouped vesicles with underlying erythema
secodnary morphology: crusts, erosions
management: they usually flare up and then go away, but PO anti0virals also work (vancyclovir)
classic herpes simplec on torso
- grouped vesicles
- older ones evolving to pustules
this is also hsv but the vesicles on the fingers look deeper seated because there is a thicker stratum corneum than there is on the face or genitals
erythema multiforme
- usually self limited. symmetric fixed red papules with “target lesions”
- often preciptated by infection
can have mucosal involvement in major forms.
classic lesion in erythema multiforme
what causes EM?
- usually self limited. symmetric fixed red papules with “target lesions”
- often preciptated by infection
can have mucosal involvement in major forms.
