Skeletal System Flashcards
The skeletal system function
-internal frame
Producing blood cells, storing minerals and movement
Function of the bone support
Acts like a steel frame providing a structure that’s supports the body’s internal system and give the body shape
Function protection
Protects the delicate internal organs
Function movement
Skeletal muscles are attached to bones by tendons, and they act as levers to produce movement when the muscles contract
Store mineral
Bones store minerals, mainly calcium and phosphorus, which can be realeased in the blood stream and help with bone strength
Blood cell formation
Occurs in the bone marrow, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
Compact bone
Is dense and looks smooth and homogeneous
Spongy bone
Has spiky, open appearance like a sponge
Long bones
-longer than wide
-shaft with enlarged ends
-mostly compact but has spongy bones at end
-all bones of the limbs except patella and wrist and ankle bones are long bones
Flat bones
Are thin ,flattened and usually curved
-have two thin layers of compact bones sandwiching a layer of spongy bone between them
Most bones of the skull, ribs, and sternum are flat bones
Short bones
Are generally cube shaped
-mostly contain spongy bone with a outer layer of compact bone
Bones which form t from tendons are special short bone
Ireggular bones
The vertebrae which make up the spinal Collumn fall into this group
Mainly spongy bone with an outer layer of compact bone
