Apendages Nail Plate Flashcards
Nail plate
The actual rows of dead highly keritanised stratum corneum cells;essentially pure keratin
Underneath nail plate is nail bed
Living keratinocytes underneath the nail plate -don’t make much keratin and never slough since they are covered with nail plates
Free edge
Part of the nail that grows past the nail bed and the part we clip
The hyponychium
is the thickened layer of skin located underneath the free edge of the nail (the part of the nail that extends beyond the fingertip).
Acts as a Seal – Prevents dirt, bacteria, and fungi from getting under the nail and into the nail bed.
Provides Protection – Helps support the nail as it grows and protects the sensitive skin underneath.
Mail matrix
Epidermal stratum bassale cells that produce the highly keritonised cells of the nail plate
The lunula
is the half-moon-shaped, whitish area at the base of the nail, near the cuticle.
Part of the Nail Matrix – The lunula is the visible portion of the nail matrix, where new nail cells are actively produced.
Indicates Nail Health – A visible lunula is generally a sign of healthy nail growth. If it’s missing or very small, it could be due to genetics or health conditions.
Covers the Nail Matrix – Protects the growing area of the nail from damage.
Eponychium
Delicate skin that produces the cuticle and help seal the space between mail matrix and nail plate
Cuticle
Stratum corneum cells that seal the nail matrix may accumulate on nail plate
