Neurons Flashcards

1
Q

A

Gradually Destroys the myelin sheaths around cns fibers by converting them to harden sheaths called sceleroses

Q

Grouped in clusters

A

CNS (Central Nervous System):
Most neuron cell bodies are found in the CNS.
They are grouped in clusters called nuclei (singular: nucleus).
These nuclei are important for processing and relaying information.
PNS (Peripheral Nervous System):
In the PNS, clusters of neuron cell bodies are called ganglia (singular: ganglion).

Q

CNS vs. PNS Terminology:

A

Tracts (CNS): Bundles of nerve fibers (axons) running through the central nervous system (brain & spinal cord).
Nerves (PNS): Bundles of nerve fibers (axons) running through the peripheral nervous system (outside the brain & spinal cord).

A

Contains myelinated axons, which help speed up nerve impulses.

Gray Matter:

A

Contains unmyelinated axons, cell bodies, and dendrites, which are involved in processing information.

Q

So, white matter is responsible for fast signal transmission, while gray matter is where most processing and decision-making happen!
