Astrocytes Flashcards
Astrocytes: g Structure: Star-shaped glial cells.
Support neurons, maintain blood-brain barrier.
Oligodendrocytes
Myelinate axons in the CNS (create a myelin sheath around nerve fibers to increase signal transmission speed).
Provide structural support to neurons.
Microglia
Act as immune cells, remove waste.
Ependymal Cells:
Produce and circulate cerebrospinal fluid.CSF
which cushions and protects the brain and spinal cord.
Additionally, the cilia on ependymal cells help to circulate the CSF, ensuring that it flows properly throughout the brain and spinal cord,
Schwann Cells:
Myelinate axons in the PNS to increase nerve impulse transmission speed.
Aid in the regeneration of damaged nerve fibers in the PNS.
Location: Found in the PNS (outside the brain and spinal cord).
Satellite Cells
Support and nourish neurons in ganglia (clusters of neuron cell bodies).
Regulate the chemical environment around neurons.
