Integumentary System Better Explaining Flashcards
Cutaneous membrane
Skin
Largest organ of the body
Has two main components
Dermis and epidermis
Epidermis epi meaning on top and dermis meaning skin
Karatinized stratified epithelium
Part of the skin you see everyday
And it’s avascular no bloodcells
Dermis
Lies below the epidermis
Consists of loose connective tissue and dense irregular tissue
Hypodermis
Hypo meaning below
Dermis meaning skin
Not apart of skin
Function to anchor skin and muscles togheter
Protection
The skin protects body from mechanical trauma ,pathogens and environmental damage
Excretion
The skin excretes waste and inquiries via sweat
Vitamin D synthesis
The skin synthesis vitamin d when exposed to ultraviolet radioactivity
Thermoregultation
The skin maintains a stable internal body temperature through negative feedback loops
Sensation
The skin has sensory receptors that detect internal and external environmental change such as, heat, cold and or pain
Keratinocytes (cytes-cells)
Make up 95% of cells in the epidermis
Strengthtens epidermis makes it resistant to mechanical trauma
Joined by desmosomes
Arranged into strata or layers
Layers of epidermis
Stratum corneum
Stratum lucidum
Stratum granulosum
Stratum spinosum
Stratum bassale
Stratum corneum
Most superficial layer of the epidermis
Several layers of dead flattened keratinocytes
Sheds dead keratinocytes
Stratum granulosome
Middle layer of the epidermis
Named for prominent granules
3-5 rows of cells
Excretes a lipid based substance
Stratum spinosum spino prickly
Deep to the stratum bassale
Thickest stratum to its spiky appearing cells
Cells are metabolically active
Undergo mitosis
Help to systhesis vitamin d
Stratum bassale
The deepest layer of epidermis
Consists of a single layer of stem cells
Richest supply of blood
Most metabolically active
Undergo mitosis
Also known as stratum germinativum
Helps to synthesize vitamin d
