Integumentury Flashcards
Keratinocytes life cycle
Begins in the stratum spinosum
Sheds in the stratum corneum
Can shred from environmental and physical stress
Shed cells are replaced by mitosis
Cels primarily devide at night
Dendritic cells (langerhan) cells
Found in stratum spinosum
Phagocytes of the immune system
Protects the skin and underlying tissue from pathogens
Merkel cells
Oval cells found in the stratum bassale
Sensory receptors that detect light, touch, shapes and textures
Also found in fingerprints, lips and base of hair
Melanocytes
Found in stratum bassale
Produces melanin a protein that give’s colour to skin
Thick skin
Consist of five layers of the epidermis with thick stratum corneum
Equivalent to the size of a paper towel
Lacks hair follicles
Contains sweat glands
Contains in palms of hands and sole of feat
Could have lots of mechanical stress
Thin skin
Consist of only four layers of the epidermis, lacking the stratum lucidium
Equivalent to the size sheet of printing paper
Has hair follicles
Less mechanical stress
Dermis
Houses blood supply
Anchors epidermis in place
Two layers
Palpilary layer
And recticuler layer
Papillary layer
Most superficial layer of the dermis
Consists of loose conective tissue
Collagen fibers anchor dermis and epidermis together
Dermal papillae
Found in the surface of the papillary layer
Houses tiny blood vessels called capillaries
Houses sensory receptors called tactile meissner corpuscles
Reticular layer
Deepest and thickest layer of the dermis
Consists of dense irregular connective tissue
Collegen that strengthen the dermis
Elastic fibers that allow skin to revert after stretching
Protectoglycocan that hydrates the skin
Blood vessels and accessory structures
Sensory Receptors
