Blood Flashcards
Blood is unique
It is the only fluid tissue in the body.
Although blood appears to be a thick homogeneous liquid
The microscope reveals that it has both solid and liquid components
Living blood cells are
Formed elements that is suspended in plasma
Plasma is a
Non living matrix
Collagen and elastin fibers
Are typical in other connective tissue but are absent from blood
There is instead
Dissolved protiens in blood
The dissolved protiens become
Visible as fibrin strands during blood clotting
Most of the redish pellets are erythrocytes (erythro = red)
Red blood cells function in oxygen transport
There is a then witish layer called Buffy coat at the junction between the erythrocytes and the plasma
This layer contains the remaining found elements leukocytes Leuko=white that act in various ways to protect the body and platelets cell fragments that help stop bleeding
Hematocrit
How much red cells body’s make up the blood
Erythrocytes= 45%
White blood cells =1%
Plasma makes up most with 55%
