What are the steps for setting up aids for an RNAV?
- QNH, CSEL, FMS for Nav 1, FMS for BP1, TACAN for BP2, HT as appropriate
What are the major steps for setting up the FMS for an RNAV?
- Select the RNAV Z for your RWY
- Input the hold
- Confirm minima is available
- Cross check
What are the major parts of the brief for an RNAV?
- Approach name a date
- Commencement WP
- Expected sector entry (no hold required if no hold) thank you
- Inbound track
- MDA of XXX feet
- Radalt setting
- Missed approach, circling approach or full stop (brief the one that you are flying and what it entails)
- 10 mile safe
- 25NM safe for your sector
- Any notes for the approach
What does the R/T sound like to centre for an RNAV?
- “Sale Centre, ROLR XX, Area X, Recvd X, altitude, requesting IFR RNAV Z runway XX sector entry and hold via XX (holding WP), intentions are for the missed approach/full stop/circling to RWYXX”
When you make your centre call, what other considerations should be made?
- Be ready to take down details of what ATC have said to you
- Be ready to turn and track directly to the hold should you be required
When do you slow down to 160KIAS for the RNAV?
- When the 5NM range ring hits the WP
When do you configure to gear down and flaps T/O in the RNAV?
- When in the hold downwind turning onto the RWY heading
In the hold, to complete your admin, what is the sequence and what does each item mean?
- Bug (set for outbound HDG) turn (20AoB) time (set the clock), talk (any R/T or altimetry)
You are in the hold, when do you commence your timing on downwind?
- When you are abeam or wings level, which ever is last
What are the RADALT settings for a missed approach and a circling approach?
- Missed approach is 250ft
- Circling approach is 400ft
When do you set the ALTSEL to 3500ft on the RNAV?
When the altsel goes off descending past 4500ft
How is a sector 1 entry flown?
Track directly towards the hold, once you pass over the hold WP, start a 20ºAoB Turn to wars the hold to intercept the outbound track. Once on the unbound track make a turn in the opposite direction to capture the inbound track on a 30º intercept
How is a sector 2 entry to the hold flown?
Sector 2 (tear drop) is flown by passing over the hold and making a turn to line up with a track by 30º offset to the inbound track. (266º + 30º = 296º, 041 + 30 = 071). Once established on this track maintain until through the hold (out the other side and make a 20º AoB turn to intercept the inbound track.
