Night Flying MB Gouge Flashcards

1
Q

What is a somatogravic illusion?

A
  • Confusion of linear translation or tilt (otoliths)
  • Caused by poor visual cues, rapid acceleration, missed approach, rapid deceleration
  • Often causes pilots on T/O to pitch forward as acceleration makes them feel a pitch up sensation

A
  • Gear up
  • Flap Up
  • Landing Light OFF
22
Q

When should solo students select the landing light on for landing?

A

The LDG light should be selected ON at the conclusion of finals checks

Gear - Down 3 green
Flaps - T/O
Runway - Clear
Cleared T+G
Landing light on

23
Q

Lighting on the PC-21 is powered by what systems?

A

GEN 1: Formation, Anti-Coll and recognition lights (FAR)
BATT BUS: Landing/Taxi lights, navigation lights and all internal lights/displays (except for the SFD)
EMRG Bus: SFD

24
Q

When should the ground power be plugged in during night operations?

A

Should be connected prior to commencing pre flight walk around (when you do ejection seat and initial cockpit CX)

25
Q

What displays within the cockpit have individual lighting controls and where are they located?

A

HUD
- Located on the bottom LHS with a rotary knob

MFD’s and PFD
- Located on the top left of each display

FMS, EMD

26
Q

What do the internal light twist knob switches do?

A

Floods
- Controls the brightness of the flood lights that sit under the edges of the cockpit

Panels
- Controls the backlights (gree)

27
Q

List all external lights and their location on the PC-21:

A

Wingtip lights
- Navigation lights (port = left = red)
- Anti-Coll (strobe lights)

Outer leading edge lights
- Recognition lights (recog)

Nose gear
- LDG/Taxi Lights

Misc
- Formation lights

28
Q

By how much are green red and white anti-col lights dimmed when set to this setting?

A

They are 30% of their normal brightness, so 70% dimmer

29
Q

Which side is the landing light positioned on the nose gear?

A

From the pilot perspective, the LL is on the left

30
Q

Where is the compass and clock light switch located?

A

Located on top of and to the RHS of the clock

31
Q

On the internal lighting controls, which switch controls NVIS compatible lighting and how is this done?

A

The displays rotary knob allows the use of NVIS modes by rotating the knob counter clock wise to use MAX and NVIS modes

32
Q

What does the displays internal lighting knob control?

A

PFD, MFD, SFD, EMD, FMS, DWP (red and amber), LGCU, AOA indexer, panel switch indicators, magnetic compass and attention getters

33
Q

What does the panels internal lighting knob control?

A

PFD/MFD Bezels, FMS keyboard, panel backlights and other backlighting fixtures

34
Q

What does the floods internal lighting knob control?

A

Side wall flood lights

35
Q

What does CLDU mean?

A

Cockpit lighting dimmer unit

36
Q

How are landing and recog lights checked when on the ground?

A
  • Warm/scan for personnel before checking
  • momentarily turn the lights on then off
37
Q

How are red and white anti-col lights checked in the pre flight?

A
  • Operated on and off at the same times as per daylight however lighting is set to dim taxi
  • Can be operated as dim in flight if distracting
38
Q

How and when are navigation lights used by at night?

A
  • Leave ON at 5% when doing walk around and when taxiing
  • Select to 100% on line up checks
39
Q

If you are high before the crosswing turn what should you do to correct your height?

A

Wait until downwind, descent by night on cross wind is banned

40
Q

What do you lose when TRIM/AIL PWR is OFF?

A

Spoilers
Powered ailerons
Anti-skid
Wheel brakes
Trims + TAD
Autopilot

41
Q

What difference are made to the after landing checks?

A

Set the NAV lights to 5%, DIM anti-col lights

42
Q

When night flying, what are the requirements for the pilot to descent below circling to land in an RNAV approach, what requirements must be met before descending?

A

ENR 1.6.6

  • Maintain obstacle clearance until aligned with the runway
  • Maintain within the circling area
  • Vis along flight path not less than minimum on the chart
  • Maintain visual contact with the “runway environment”
  • An approach will use rates of descent and flight manoeuvres considered “normal” for the aircraft
43
Q

What is the R/T to TWR when at the holding point?

A

“Sale TWR, ROLR XX, Ready request 30 seconds”

44
Q

For the 3mile final circuit, at what TACAN distances do you turn for RWY 09 and 27?

A

For 09 you turn when the TACAN reads 4.7Nm
For 27 you turn when the TACAN reads 3.5Nm

45
Q

In the after T/O checks, when is it best to turn off the LL?

A

LL should be turned off after you have captured 160KIAS and potential after you have levelled off at 730ft for a low level

46
Q

On taxi when do you check and adjust your cockpit lights?

A

Every time that you stop. E.g. In the check bays and at the holding point

47
Q

When should the LL be turned off and on on the ground?

A

The LL can be considered like high beams on a car, don’t use them when you are facing someone or in a well lit area like the parking bays

48
Q

When should you transition from 5º to 3º on the base turn?

A

As soon as one red light is visible on the PAPIs
