IF Phase 2 Gouge FM MBs Flashcards
What is the difference between DA and MDA?
- DAs are associated with a 3D approach
- MDAs are for a 2D approach
- MDAs are a level alt which you hold until you hit the Missed approach point, DAs you descend to the altitude then immediately go around should you not be visible, DAs are usually lower than an MDA
What’s standard speeds for different phases of IF approaches?
180KTS standard
210KTS at initial (not the IP like in GF)
How much vertical separation is provided by 10 and 25NM MSAs?
1000ft obstacle clearance
Where do military approach plates come from?
TERMA
What are the 3D and 2D approaches?
3D
- Always runway alighed
- Uses a Decision height
- LNAV/VNAV (Combined)
- Maintain 1000ft aimpoint
- Land flap selected
2D
- Aligned with a nav aid
- Uses a MDA
- Aim for 500ft point once visual
- Select LDG flap once visual (un confirmed)
When reading off approach waypoints, how are they spoken?
You don’t say the first 3 letters, the 4th letter is a compass cardinal direction and the last letter is dependent
F = Final approach fix (FAF)
I = Initial approach fix (IAF)
Distances used for the approach to an RNAV can be from:
Can be based off the TACAN but are usually measured from the RWY threshold
What admin is required to be completed before beginning an IF approach?
- Confirm AP is good to go
- Confirm airspace is good
- Comms (set stud 5)
- Primary nav source
- ## CSEL is good
Which navaids need to be positively identified by intending by listening to the Morse code?
ILS only need to be identified
On an approach plate, the numbers in the brackets for the MDA/DA, what do they mean?
The brackets mean that is the height above ground, used to set the RADALT to the appropriate setting, rounded up to the nearest 10ft
During an RNAV approach, you have just reached the MDA/DA, what is required for you to continue the descent? (3)
- Visual reference to the ground
- IRL meteorological conditions are better than minima on the plate
- Able to position the aircraft using “normal” manoeuvring
When circling to land in an RNAV approach, what requirements must be met before descending below the MDA? (4)
ENR 1.6.6
- Maintain within the circling area
- Vis along flight path not less than minimum on the chart
- Maintain visual contact with the “runway environment”
- An approach will use rates of descent and flight manoeuvres considered “normal” for the aircraft
How is a 730ft circuit different to that of a normal circuit?
Point, PWR, flap takes place turning halfway through the base turn (When you turn through S if flying circuits to the N)
Under what conditions MUST a missed approach be conducted? (Missed approach criteria) (4)
ENR 1.9.1
- Out of tracking tolerances (more than half scale deflection)
- Below MSA if the navaid fails (Loss of RAIM/RAIM warning)
- Not visual at the MAPt/DA
- Lost visual once circling
What is the minimum obstacle clearance for a class C aircraft like that of the PC-21?
400ft obstacle clearance
