What is latitude? 1º of latitude equals how many NM? Why can’t longitude be used to measure distance?
Latitude at the lines that run horizontal around the earth, they are parallel with the equator. 1º of latitude equals 60NM. Longitude cannot be used because these lines are not parallel.
Where can the magnetic correction be found?
ERC chart, as the dashed green lines running diagonally
When flying East Vs West, where can the VFR cruising altitudes be found?
They can be found on an ERC chart if required?
What is the rule of thumb for E/W VFR cruising levels?
West = Even 1000’s
East = Odd 1000’s
What does IAS, CAS, EAS, TAS and GS mean?
CAS = corrected for pitot turn errors
EAS = CAS corrected for compressibility
TAS = EAS corrected for pressure altitude + temp
GS = TAS corrected for wind
What does EEIand EET mean?
EEI means estimated elapsed time
- Is the total for the whole flight
EET = estimated elapsed interval
- Is the time taken for a specific leg of the journey
What is the rule of thumb when calculating reserve fuel?
Fuel burn expected x 1.1 (for 10% reserve) additionally Even if the answer is 121lbs, always round up to 125lbs on the safe side
What is the order from top to bottom for the information in the dog boxes?
Waypoint number
Heading (Mag)
Leg Distance
LSALT (AMSL)
Min fuel (to continue the route, written in red)
How should colour be used to make up a map?
Green should be used to highlight CTAF/class G radio frequencies/points of interests
Brown should be used for frequencies/airspace that are controlled
Can TACAN be used to set and outbound track?
Yes but not the point of NAV and the QFI will likely say no
What is the R/T to sale delivery if you have put in the correct flight plan and do not want to make changes?
“Sale delivery, ROLR XX, for East Sale/Nowra, request clearance”
What is the function of setting the PFD to CDI mode?
Can set a HDG unsung the CRS bar as well as with the HDG bug, effectively gives you a 2nd HDG bug
What is the ICAO requirement for an outbound track to be intersected?
5NM from departure, unless ATC say something else
What is the tracking requirement for VFR aircraft?
Must gain a visual confirmation of location every 30mins, must remain within 1NM of planned track
What is a departure report and when is it required?
A departure report is exactly that, not required at ESL however likely required at Nowra
