reporting results/report writing Flashcards
what are things not to write in a report
we, I, prove/disprove
what are the 8 components of a report
in order
title
abstract
introduction
method
results
discussion
references
appendix
what is a title and what does it do
it determines who reads the full report
it needs to be concise and informative so it is not misleading and the reader knows where the data was from
what is an abstract, what does it include etc
written last but inserted between title and intro
150-200 word summary of topic studied
aim
main background
description of:
participant
sampling technique
procedure
results (stats and sig level)
what the findings mean
conclusion
implications
suggestions for future research
what is the introduction and what does it include
explains existing background research to the reader, giving context, reasoning behind investigation (aims) an predictions derived from the hypothesis
why should a method be detailed
it should contain enough detail that the study can be replicated, this checks whether the findings are reliable, internal validity, confounding variables, demand characteristics, sampling errors
what are the 5 subsections of the method
design
sample
materials(apparatus)
procedure
ethics
what is the design section of the method
a brief outline of the method and design used, no of groups/conditions, investigative variables, controls (but full exp in procedure)
what is the sample section of the method
key features of the ps age range, gender, how they were selected (so pop val can be assessed), sampling method, target population
what is the materials section of the method
this is where all the equipment that has been used is listed and explained
what is the procedure section of the method
explain precisely how the study was conducted, how ps were allocated, instructions used, how data was collected, details that might impact internal validity inc verbatim record of everything said during: breifing, standarised instructions and debriefing
what is the ethics section of the method
an explanation of how these were addressed within the study
what are the 2 sections of the results section
descriptive statistics
and inferential statistics
what is the descriptive statistics section of the results section
measures of central tendency and dispersion are displayed in clearly labelled tabled so that differences between groups can be seen quickly and easily
what is the inferential statistics section of the results section
used to analyse the data then the null H can be accepted or rejected, summarise the findings using trhe critical value and then restate either the null of alternative H
