a police technique for interviewing witnesses to a crime that attempts to increase of the accessibilty of stored information by using multiple retrieval strategies

what are the characteristics of a standard interview
interviewer does a lot of talking and asks a specific set of pre determined questions, following a checklist, many are forced choice. witness is discouraged from adding additional information. questions may be leading
problems with forced choice questions
can be problematic because witnesses might not have a specific answer mentioned in the question and they could be inbetween
why is cognitive interview thought to work
using multiple methods and varying them increases recall
MRC can act as an environmental or physiological cue
makes schema less influential

avoids direct questioning.
encourages witness to recreate the original context in their head to increase recall
what is mentally reinstating context
mentally recreates psych and phys environment making memories more accessible as it provides the appropriate contextual and emotional cues for retrieval

report every single detail without editing anything out even if it seems irrelevant. small details for
why might reporting every detail be useful
memories are interconnected and so one might act as a cue for another.
