16
Q

what does the parietal lobe process

A

sensory information eg touch, pain temperature

17
Q

what does the occipital lobe process

A

visual information

18
Q

what does the temporal lobe involved with

A

hearing and language comprehension

19
Q

the brain stem is responsible for regulating…… which are essential for….. eg

A

regulating autonomic function which are essential for life eg breathing, heartbeat, swallowing

20
Q

the brain stem includes which strucutre

A

medulla oblongata

21
Q

where is the cerebellum located

A

sits beneath the back of the cerebrum

22
Q

what is the cerebellum involved in controlling

A

motor skills balance and coordinating muscles

23
Q

the brain stem allows impulses to pass between the

A

brain and the spinal cord

24
Q

where is the diencephalon located

A

on top of the brain stem

25
Q

which 2 structures does the diencephalon contain

A

the thalamus and the hypothalamus

26
Q

the hypothalamus regulates (3)

A

body temp, hunger and thirst

27
Q

the hypothalamus acts as the link between

A

the endocrine system and the nervous system

28
Q

the thalamus acts as a relay station for nerve impulses coming from …….. and is also involved in several functions inc ……/…..

A

nerve impulses coming from the senses

sleep/wakefullness

29
Q

the spinal cord consists of …… pairs of spinal nerves

A

31

30
Q

what is the main function of the spinal cord

A

to relay info between the brain and the rest of the body

enabling the brain to monitor and regulate internal bodily processes and coordinate voluntary movement

31
Q

how are the nerves arranged in the spinal cord (hint; roots)

A

each nerve divides into 2 roots
one root contains sensory neurons so sensory info can be transmitted to the brain
the other roots contains motor neurons so motor signals can be transmitted to skeletal muscles and internal organs

32
Q

the spinal cord also allows for …….. without direct involvement of the …….

A

simple/quick reflexes

33
Q
A
34
Q

identify the 2 components of the peripheral nervous system and explain 2 differences in their organisation and/or functions (4)

A

the components are the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system

the sns has sensory and motor pathways while the ans is purely motor

the ans controls internal organs and glands of the body while sns controls skeletal muscle and movement

the ans control centres are in the brain stem whilst sns carries commands from the motor cortex
