- At its lower end, it bends backwards forming anal canal called perineal flexure
- It has lateral flexures: upper and lower are concave to left while middle is concave to right

Not covered with peritoneum (bare) because peritoneum is reflected forwards to:
1. Upper part of urinary bladder posterior wall (in male) forming rectovesical pouch (7.5 cm from anus)
2. Back of upper 1/3 of vagina posterior wall (in female) forming rectouterine (Douglas) pouch (5.5 cm from anus)
