Bony Pelvis Flashcards
Formation
Consists of 4 bones:
1. 2 hip bones
2. Sacrum
3. Coccyx
Bounded together by 4 joints and strong ligaments
Formation: in front
2 hip bones articulate at symphysis pubis
Formation: behind
Each hip bone articulates with sacrum at sacroiliac joint
Formation: behind and below
Sacrum articulates with coccyx at sacrococcygeal joint
Anatomical position
- During standing, ASIS and symphysis pubis upper border lie in same vertical plane
- Pelvic inlet plane makes an angle 50-60 degrees with horizontal plane
Pelvic inlet: in front
- Symphysis pubis
- Pubic crest
Pelvic inlet: lateral
Iliopectineal lines
Pelvic inlet: behind
- Sacrum Ala
- Promontory
Pelvic outlet
Corresponds to perineum region which is trunk lower end
Pelvic outlet: shape
Diamond
Pelvic outlet: anterior
Symphysis pubis lower border
Pelvic outlet: on each side
- Ischiopubic rami
- Ischial tuberosity
- Sacrotuberous ligaments
Pelvic outlet: posterior
Coccyx tip
Pelvic cavity divisions
Inlet plane divides pelvic cavity into:
1. False (greater) pelvis
2. True (lesser) pelvis
False pelvis
- Above pelvic inlet
- Contains pelvic viscera
- Bounded on each side by iliac fossa
- Below pelvic inlet
- Contains pelvic viscera
- It has upper opening (pelvic inlet) and lower opening (pelvic outlet)
True pelvis boundries
- Anteroinferior: symphysis pubis and pubic rami
- Posterior: sacrum and coccyx
- Lateral: pelvic aspect of fused ilium and ischium
Diameters
- Anteroposterior
- Transverse
- Oblique
Anteroposterior diameters of inlet
Between
1. Midpoints of sacral promontory
and
2. Symphysis pubis upper border
Anteroposterior diameters of cavity
Between
1. Midpoints of S3 vertebra and
2. Symphysis pubis posterior surface
Anteroposterior diameters of outlet
Between
1. Coccyx apex
To
2. Midpoint of symphysis pubis lower border
Transverse diameters of inlet
Maximum distance between similar points on opposite sides of pelvic brim
Transverse diameters of cavity
Widest transverse distance between cavity side walls
Transverse diameters of outlet
Between 2 ischial tuberosities medial borders
