Q

Ovary

A
  1. Pair of ovoid structures
  2. Its long axis is usually vertical
  3. Lies in a depression in lesser pelvis lateral wall (ovarian fossa)

Q

Boundries

A
  1. Anterior: external iliac vessels
  2. Posterior: internal iliac vessels and ureter
  3. Fossa floor: obturator nerve and vessels
N.B.: Ovary position is variable in multipara due to repeated pregnancies

Q

Relations

A

In nulliparous woman, ovary has: - 2 borders (anterior and posterior)
- 2 poles (superior and inferior)
- 2 surfaces (medial and lateral)

13
Q

Mesovarium

A
  1. Short peritoneal fold which connects ovary anterior attached border to posterior layer of uterus broad ligament
  2. It carries blood vessels and nerves to ovarian hilum

15
Q

Ovarian ligament

A
  1. Fibrous cord which connects ovary lower pole to uterus superolateral angle just below and behind uterine tube attachment
  2. It is remnant of gubernaculum upper part

16
Q

Arterial supply

A

Ovarian artery

17
Q

Ovarian artery origin and course

A
  1. Arises from abdominal aorta at L2 vertebra level below renal artery origin
  2. Descends downward and lateral
  3. At pelvic inlet, it enters suspensory ligament then mesovarium to reach ovary
18
Q

Ovarian artery supply

A
  1. Supplies ovary and fallopian tube lateral 1/5
  2. It runs medial towards uterus to anastomose freely with uterine artery
19
Q

Lymph drainage

A

Paraaortic lymph nodes

20
Q

Venous supply

A

Ovarian vein

21
Q

Ovarian vein course

A
  1. Emerges from ovary as venous plexus (pampiniform plexus) in mesovarium and suspensory ligament
  2. 2 veins arise from plexus and ascend with ovarian artery
22
Q

Ovarian vein drainage

A

They usually form 1 vein draining in:
1. IVC: on right side
2. Left renal vein: on left side
