Ovary Flashcards
Size
1x2x3 cm
Ovary
- Pair of ovoid structures
- Its long axis is usually vertical
- Lies in a depression in lesser pelvis lateral wall (ovarian fossa)
Boundries
- Anterior: external iliac vessels
- Posterior: internal iliac vessels and ureter
- Fossa floor: obturator nerve and vessels
N.B.: Ovary position is variable in multipara due to repeated pregnancies
Relations
In nulliparous woman, ovary has: - 2 borders (anterior and posterior)
- 2 poles (superior and inferior)
- 2 surfaces (medial and lateral)
Anterior attached border
attached to posterior layer of uterus broad ligament by mesovarium
Posterior free border
Faces internal iliac vessels and ureter
Superior tubal pole
Related to suspensory ligament of ovary and fallopian tube fimbria
Inferior uterine pole
Attached to uterine cornu by ovarian ligament
Medial surface
Faces uterus and overlapped by uterine tube Fimbrated end
Lateral surface
Contacts lateral pelvic wall (ovarian fossa)
Peritoneal covering
Completely covered by peritoneum, except at site of mesovarium attachment
Ligaments
- Mesovarium
- Infundibulo-pelvic ligament (Suspensory ligament of ovary)
- Ovarian ligament
Mesovarium
- Short peritoneal fold which connects ovary anterior attached border to posterior layer of uterus broad ligament
- It carries blood vessels and nerves to ovarian hilum
Infundibulopelvic ligament
- Peritoneal fold attached to superior tubal pole
- It transmits ovarian vessels and nerves
Ovarian ligament
- Fibrous cord which connects ovary lower pole to uterus superolateral angle just below and behind uterine tube attachment
- It is remnant of gubernaculum upper part
