Anal Canal: Sphincters Flashcards
1
Q
Anal sphincters
A
- Internal
- External
2
Q
Internal
A
- Formed by thickened inner circular muscle layer
- Surrounds anal canal upper 3/4
- Formed of involuntary smooth muscle fibers and supplied by autonomic nerve fibers
3
Q
External
A
- Lies outside internal anal sphincter
- Surrounds whole anal canal
- Formed of voluntary striated muscle fibers and has 3 parts
- Supplied by somatic nerves from inferior rectal nerve (branch from pudendal nerve) and perineal branch of 4th sacral nerve
4
Q
Parts
A
- Subcutaneous
- Superficial
- Deep
5
Q
Subcutaneous part
A
Surrounds anal canal lower 1/4 and anal orifice
6
Q
Superficial part
A
- Superior to subcutaneous part
- Only part with bony attachment
- Extends from coccyx tip of behind to perineal body in front
7
Q
Deep part
A
- Strongest part
- Superior to superficial part
- Surrounds canal upper part
- Its deep fibers are reinforced by levator ani puborectalis part both parts blend with internal anal sphincter forming strong anorectal ring
