Internal Pudendal Artery Flashcards
Beginning
In pelvis as one of 2 terminals of internal iliac artery anterior division
Course
- Leaves pelvis though greater sciatic foramen below piriformis
- Reach gluteal region where it crosses ischial spine back to pass through lesser sciatic foramen and reaches ischiorectal fossa lateral wall
- In ischiorectal fossa it enters pudendal canal
- Runs from its posterior end to its anterior end
- Leaves it to enter deep perineal pouch
- Passes along pubic arch side
End
Short distance posterior to symphysis pubis by dividing into dorsal and deep arteries of penis (in male) and clitoris (in female) before or after piercing perineal membrane
Branches
- Inferior rectal
- Perineal
- Artery of bulb
- Urethral
- 2 terminals
Inferior rectal artery
- Pierces pudendal canal medial wall to enter ischiorectal fossa
- Crosses fossa from lateral to medial to reach and supply anal canal
Perineal artery
1.Pierces pudendal canal medial wall to enter ischiorectal
fossa
2. Pierces perineal membrane to enter superficial perineal pouch
3. Divides into:
- Transverse perineal artery
- Posterior scrotal (in male) labial (in female)
Transverse perineal artery
Supply superficial transverse perineal muscles
Posterior scrotal or labial artery
Supply scrotum or labium majus
Artery of bulb
- Arises in deep perineal pouch
- Pierces perineal membrane to enter penis bulb
- Runs through corpus spongiosum along urethra side
- Supplies bulb of vestibule in female
Urethral artery
- Arises in deep perineal pouch
- Pierces perineal membrane
- Supply penile urethra
2 terminals
- Dorsal artery of penis (in male) or clitoris (in female):
Pierces perineal membrane and passes on penis dorsal surface (in male) or clitoris (in female) - Deep artery of penis (or clitoris):
Pierces perineal membrane to enter corpus cavernosum
