radiation biology Flashcards
the study of the effect of ionizing radiation on living tissue, to understand the harmful effects of x-radiation
radiation biology
cell damage results when ionizing radiation directly hits thee critical areas or targets within the cell
direct theory
x-ray energy absorbs within the cell and causes formation of toxins which damages the cell
indirect theory
period of injury
the actual period of cell damage and/or death
recovery radiation
depends on many factors. Cells can repair the damage caused by radiation
the time that elapses between exposure to ionizing radiation and the appearance of observable clinical signs. can be few hours to days eg) sunburn
latent period
total dose
quantity of radiation received
dose rate
the rate at which exposure to radiation occurs and absorption takes place
amount of tissue irradiated
areas of the body exposed to radiation
cell sensitivity
more damage occurs in cells that are most sensitive to radiation
children…reduce adult exposure by
1/3
edentulous ..reduce edentulous by
1/4
erythema (short term effects)
aka radiation dermatitis. Skin gets red after receiving too much radiation
genetic effects
damage to reproductive cells passed on to future generations.
somatic effects
damage to tissues not inherited from one generation to the next
