Smaller brains, larger ventricles, cortex thinner
Damage to areas of brain related to language/auditory fxn
-toxic environmental exposures early ink life
genetic predisposition
inutero viral infection, toxin exposures, birth trauma
Exposure to psychoactive substances during adolescence and early adulthood
- marijuana
- LSD, cocaine, amphetamines
Schizophrenia presentation
More than 6 mo of psychosis and decline in functioning
Dx: 2+ sx for 6+ mo:
Positive sx: increased dopamine in mesolimbic pathway
Must be present: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech
Others: grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
Negative sx: decreased dopamine in mesocortical tract Flat affect Social withdrawal Avolition Alogia Thought blocking Poor grooming
Presents earlier in men – teens/early 20s
10 yrs earlier than females
increased risk of suicide
Schizophreniform ds
Psychotic sx for 1-6 mo
Brief psychotic disorder
Psychotic sx for less than 1 mo
Schizoaffective ds
Schizophrenic psychosis + mood ds
Psychosis dominant – sx 2+ weeks in absence of mood ds
Time period w/ psychosis and major mood ds at same time
Major depressive or manic
Schizoid personality ds
Avoid social interactions
Schizotypal personality ds
Avoid social interaction
Odd thinking and strange behavior
Delusional ds
Fixed, persistent delusional belief system lasting more than 1 mo
Hallucination may be present – related to delusion
Function not impaired outside of the delusion
Behavior not bizarre
“oprah owes me money”
Folie a deux
Shared delusion – husband and wife
