MSK Injuries Flashcards
Anatomical snuff box tenderness
Scaffold fx
blood supply is distal to proximal, can get avascular necrosis –> painful arthritis
difference between a dislocated and separated shoulder
dislocated: head of humorous out of glenoid cavity
separated: clavicle separates from acromion and coracoid process of scapula
Posterior dislocation of hip
most common type of hip dislocation
Structures injured: Medial and lateral circumflex femoral a. (feed femoral neck, off of deep femoral artery) Femoral v. Sciatic n. head of femur
Ligaments injured in inversion ankle sprain
- anterior talofibular lig. (ATF)
- calcaneofibular lig
- posterior talofibular lig
Ligament injured in eversion ankle sprain
deltoid ligament
Unhappy triad of knee injury
Lateral force to knee while foot planted
- MCL
- ACL
- either Lateral meniscus (56%) or medial meniscus (44%)
Saturday Night Palsy
compression of the radial nerve against the spiral groove of humerus –> wrist drop, difficulty straightening fingers, numbness on back of hand and posterior arm
Nerve damage associated with fracture of SHAFT of humerus
radial N.
Proximal injury to ulnar n.
loss of flexion of wrist and digits
distal injury to ulnar n.
“Ulnar claw” deformity
MCP joint hyperextension and IP joint flexion of 4th and 5th digits when trying to extend
weak abduction and adduction of digits
Hypothenar wasting
Median nerve injury at elbow
“Ape hand” deformity - loss of thumb abduction
Hand of benediction
Median n injury
loss of flexion of 2nd and 3rd digits when trying to make fist
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Median n injury
-numbness of first 3 1/2 digits - worse at night or typing
entrapped by flexor retinaculum, aka transverse carpal ligament
Musculocutaneous n pathology
decreased flexion and supination of forearm
Axillary nerve damage, most common cause and sx
Anterior shoulder dislocation or fracture of SURGICAL NECK of humerus
loss of abduction, weak flexion, extension, rotation of shoulder
loss of sensation to lateral shoulder
Runs with posterior circumflex artery
