Photosyntheis Flashcards
Where does energy originally come from ?
The sun 🌞
Energy for living things come from
Food
Orgaisms that CANNOT use the sun’s energy to make food are called
Heterotrophs
Animals and most microrganisms are
Heterotrophs
Organism that use light energy from the sun to produce food are called
Autotrophs
Plants and some microorganisms ( some bacteria and protist ) are
autotrophs
Photosynthetic organisms are
Producers
Ex: grass, trees, plants
Photosynthesis is the process by which the energy of ___ is converted into __
Sunlight/ glucose
Protects the leaf (on top)
Cuticle
Let’s CO2 in and O2 out ( tiny opening on the underside of the leaf )
Stoma
Where does photosynthesis specially occur
In the chloroplast
The main energy absorbing molecule in chloroplast is
Chlorophyll
___ are plant pigments too. (these look yellow, orange, and Red). As chlorophyll dies in the fall, the green color fades and is replaced by ___
Cartencids
Chlorophyll absorbs mostly
Red and blue wavelengths of light
-occurs in thylakoids/grana
-sun’s energy is absorbed and changed into chemical energy in ATP AND NADPH-
Light-dependent reaction
What is step 1
Light strikes thylakoids and hits chlorophyll causing electron to become excited
What is step 2
Electrons jump from chlorophyll to chlorophyll through thylakoids membrane (electron transport chain) NADP + picks up high energy e- and H+ to become NADPH-
What is step 3
H2O is split by light (photolysis) electrons are given back to chlorophyll, H+ collects ,and O2 is released ( waste product you breathe )
What is step 4
H+ bonds up inside thylakoids
What is step 5
H+ pass through transport proteins ( ATP synthase ) which adds P to ADP forming ATP
____ changed into _____
ADP ,NADP+, H2O
changed into
ATP, NADPH, H+O2
