Virus Flashcards
What is a virus ?
Tiny, nonliving particles that can cause disease
What is the viruses only function ?
To make copies of itself
Why are viruses considered non living ?
Because they do not meet all 7 characteristics of life .
Additionally, they do NOT reproduce on their own. They must be inside a living cell, called a host cell
How are viruses named ?
Often named after the disease the cause of the tissue they infect
What are the basic structures ?
-Nucleic Acids core ( DNA/RNA)
-Capsid ( protein coat)
-Viral Envelope ( found in only some viruses and made of a lipid bilayer )
- spikes ( for recognition and attachment )
Does it contain genetic material, and if so what do they instructions say?
Yes, it contains DNA/RNA and it’s only instructions is to make copies of the virus -nothing else
What determines the viral shapes of viruses ?
The capsid
What are the 4 types of viral shapes and examples ?
Polyhedral ( polio virus )
cylindrical ( tobacco mosaic virus ) spherical( flu/ covid )
polyhedral ( bacteriophage )
What virus inflects bacteria .land can infect the E coli bacteria making it harmful to humans ?
Bacteriophage
What family of viruses cause illnesses such as the common cold or covid
Corona virus
What is a new train hay has not been previously identified in humans ?
Novel coronavirus
What is the importance of shape?
It allows virus to recognize and attach to specific host cells
The shape is important in viral ____ because it allows them to ___ a ____ ____
Viral replications, invade, host cell
Some are ____ specific
And som are also ____ specific
Species , cell-type
