DNA Replication Flashcards
Why does DNA replicate ?
- cells copy genetic information before cell division so that each new cell has a complete set o DNA
What is the 1st step on DNA replication?
Unwind : topoisomerase
What is the 2nd step on DNA replication?
Unzip: DNA helicase “unzips “
What is the 3rd step on DNA replication?
Hold open : single-strand binding proteins (SSBS) keep strands separated
What is the 4th step on DNA replication?
Base pairing : DNA polymerase III
What is the 5th step on DNA replication?
Proofread : DNA POLYMERASE ! proofreads new strand and backtracks to correct error
What is the 6th step on DNA replication?
Joining Nucleotide : DNA ligase bonds those nucleotides together
What is the result of DNA replication ?
2 identical DNA molecules
Why is it called semi- conservative replication ?
Because each strand has one new strand and one old strand
Replication fork:
-Leading strand is made ____ ( no breaks )
- goes on the ____ direction of the replication fork
Made continuously and goes on the same direction
Replication fork :
Okazaki fragments aka ____ ____
Goes in the ____ direction of the replication fork
Lagging strand / opposite direction
