Cells and Energy Flashcards
What is energy?
The ability to do work ( can’t be created or destroyed )
Light energy can become chemical energy (carbs ) which is a process called
Photosynthesis
Active transport
Growth and repair
Reproduction
Are examples of
Cellular activities that require energy
Compounds are held together by
Chemical bonds
What is stored in those chemical bonds ?
Energy
When you break a chemical bond
Energy is released
Glucose
NADPH- found in plants
NADH - found in animals
ATP
Are examples of
Energy storing compounds
ATP stands for
adenosine triphosphate
ATP is made of :
Adenine, ribose sugar, and 3 phosphate groups
ADP stands for
Adenosine diphosphate
What makes up ADP?
adenine, ribose , and 2 phosphate groups
What is the ADP to ATP equation ?
ADP + P+ ENERGY yields ATP
Our cell can change ATP to ADP
Over and over again
Cells only keep a ____ amount of ATP on hand
Small
Glucose has 90 x more energy than ATP ,but why can cells not use glucose ?
Because cells don’t recognize glucose as an energy source . It first needs to be converted into ATP
