Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
What is homeostasis ?
A
Regulation and maintenance of the internal environment
It maintains
-temperature
-pH
-water levels
-concentration of molecules (glucose/salt )
2
Q
What is feedback mechanism ?
A
A control mechanism that detects variations internal conditions and the body’s response to them
A feedback compares current conditions to set ranges
3
Q
What are the three components to the feedback mechanisms
A
- Sensory /receptor (stimulus-change in internal environment)
- Control center (brain )
- Effector (muscles or glands )
4
Q
What are the two kinds of feedback mechanisms ?
A
Positive and negative
5
Q
Increased change away from set points
E.g, blood clotting and child birth
A
Positive feedback loop
6
Q
Counteracts change to conditions above it below set point
E.g., eating
A
Negative feedback loop
