Describe how the pelvic diaphragm differs from the urogenital diaphragm.

What is the pelvic diaphragm?
A
The muscular pelvic floor (body wall) closing off the pelvic outlet.

What is the urogenital diaphragm?
A
Mainly fascial, closing off the UG triangle to give extra support anteriorly.

What is the perineal body.
A
- Central tendong of the perineum
- Both pelvic and urogenital diaphragms attach here

- Levator ani
- Pubococcygeus
- Iliococcygeus
- Ischiococcygeus
- Pubococcygeal “slings”:
- pubovaginalis
- levator prostatae
- puborectalis

A
- Central tendon
- Anococcygeal raphe

What is the physiological function of the pelvic diaphragm? What happens when it weakens?
A
- Continence and support
- Prolapse results with weakening of the pubococcygeus, the strongest muscle
- uterus or other organs through vagina

- Pudendal nerve from below
- Direct branches from S3,4 above
