Anatomy and Pathology of the Placenta 4 Flashcards
Distinguish between dichorionic and monochorionic placentation and compare and contrast formation and complications of these twinning patterns.
1
Q
Describe the characteristics of monochorionic placentation.
A
- Nearly always monozygotic
- 2 back-to-back amnions
- If monoamnionic, then no dividing membrane
-
Intertwin vascular connections almost always present
- aproximately 15% develop TTTS (twin-twin transfusion syndrome)
2
Q
Describe the characteristics of dichorionic placentation.
A
- Can be either monozygotic or dizygotic
- Thick dividing memrane
- 2 amnions and 2 fused chorions
- Vascular connections almost never present
3
Q
What are complications of dichorionic and monochorionic placentation?
A
- Preterm labor
- Malformations
- Twin-twin transfusion
