Anatomy of the Perineum 3 Flashcards
Define the superficial and deep perineal pouches and identify their contents. Describe Colles' fascia and its attachments and relations.
1
Q
What is the deep perineal pouch?
A
- Narrow space between two layers of the UG diaphragm
- interior fascia of the urogenital diaphragm (perineal membrane) below (superficial)
- superior fascia of the UG diaphragm above (deep)
2
Q
What are the contents of the deep perineal pouch?
A
- Deep transverse perineal muscle (skeletal muscle)
- External urethral sphincter (skeletal muscle)
- Membranous urethra
- Bulbourethral gland (in the male)
3
Q
What is the superficial perineal compartment?
A
- A pouch of the superficial body wall
- scortum in the male
- labia majora in the female
4
Q
What are the boundaries of the superficial perineal compartment?
A
- Enclosed by Colle’s fascia (in the male)
- membranous layer continuous with Scarpa’s fascia of the abdominal wall
- Blood or urine in this space cannot pass into the high or anal region
- only to the scrotum, around the penis, and upward to the abdominal wall between its superficial and deep components
5
Q
What are the structures found in the superficial perineal compartment in the male?
A
- Penis (attached via left and right crus and bulb)
- Bulbospongiosus muscle (skeletal)
- Ischiocavernosus muscle (around crura, skeletal)
- Superficial transverse pineal muscle (skeletal)
- Bulbourethral gland found in the deep pouch
6
Q
What are the structures found in the superficial perinal compartment in the female?
A
- Clitoris (with a body and left and right crus)
- Bulbospongiosus muscle (skeletal)
- Ischiocavernosus msucles (around crura, skeletal)
- Vestibular bulb (within bulbospongiosus muscle)
- Greater vestibular gland
7
Q
What are the functions of the muscles found in the superficial perineal compartment?
A
-
Superficial (and deep) transverse perineal muscles
- help stabilize the perineal body
-
Bulbospongiosus
- expels semen and empties last drops of urine in the male
- acts as a sphincter for the vagina in the female
-
Ischiocavernosus (along with bulbospongiosus)
- helps maintain erection by compressing veins
