What are the types of abstinence and its efficacy?
A
- “Continuous Abstinence”: Not engaging in any kind of sexual activity with a partner.
- “Periodic Abstinence”: Avoiding sexual intercourse when a woman might get pregnant.
- Continuous abstinence is the only way to avoid unintended pregnancy.
- Continuous abstinence is 100% effective at preventing pregnancies.
- Abstinence helps prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s).

What is outercourse? What is its efficacy?
A
- Sexual activity without vaginal intercourse.
- This keeps sperm out of the vagina.
- Nearly 100% effective.
- Pregnancy might be possible if semen spilled onto vulva and then enters vagina.
- Decreases risk of sexually transmitted diseases, but those transmitted by skin-to-skin contact can still be transmitted (i.e. HPV, HSV).

- Approximately 35 million couples throughout the world use this technique.
- When properly executed, this technique keeps sperm out of the vagina.
- 4% failure rate when always properly executed.
- 27% pregnancy rate when not always properly executed.
- Does not prevent STD’s.

Describe the efficacy and advantages of condoms.
A
- May come dry, lubricated, or coated with spermicide
- 2% pregnancy rate when always properly used.
- 18% pregnancy rate when not always properly used.
- Effectiveness can be increased with the use of spermicides (Nonoxynol-9) or withdrawal method.
