Histology of the Male Reproductive System 1 Flashcards
Name the organs of the male reproductive system in correct anatomical sequence with respect to the passage of sperm, beginning with the testes.
1
Q
What is the tubuli recti?
A
Straight tubules that connect seminiferous tubules to the rete testis
2
Q
What are the rete testis and what structures exit from here?
A
- An anastomotic plexus of channels in the mediastinum testis
- Efferent ductules exit here:
- star-shaped lumen lined with a pseudostratified epithelium
- star-shaped appearance is unique in that it is due to alternating patches of columnar and cuboidal cells rather than contraction of the ductules
3
Q
Describe the process of ejaculation.
A
- Rapid expulsion of the 3mL of semen from the penis
- Under control of sympathetic innervation of the ductus deferens that causes emission
- Emission is followed by contractions of the acessory glands and strong, peristaltic contractions of the bulbospongiosus muscle of the penis
- First semen to be expelled during ejaculation has the highest concentration fo sperm
- copious seminal vesicle secretions “push” sperm out
- ductus deferens is first to contract after lubrication of the urethra by the bulbourethral glands
4
Q
What is the sequence of contractions during ejaculation?
A
- Bulbourethral glands
- Ductus deferens/prostate gland
- Seminal vesicles
- Bulbospongiosus muscle of the corpus spongiosum of the penis
