Mechanism of Action:
Opiate R agonist ⇒
- CNS depression
- Induces analgesia and sedation
- Increases peripheral venous capacitance and decreases venous return
- Decreases myocardial oxygen demand
MORPHINE SULFATE
Pharmacokinetics
- Onset of Action = Immediate IV, 15-30 minutes IM
- Peak Effects = 20 minutes IV, 30-60 minutes IM
- Duration of Effect = 2-7 hours
- Half-Life = 1-7 hours

Indications & Contraindications
Indications/Field Use:
- Severe pain/anxiety associated with MI
- Kidney stones
- Burns
- Pulmonary edema
Contraindications:
- Hypovolemia or hypotension
- Undiagnosed head injury / AMS
- Hypersensitivity to morphine, codeine, percodan
- COPD/compromised respiratory status

Side Effects/Adverse Reactions:
AMS, N+V, HA
Blurred vision, constricted pupils
Respiratory depression
Abd. cramps,

Adult & Pedi Dose:
(ADULT): 2-10mg IV initial, then 2mg every few min until relief of pain
(PEDI): 0.1mg/kg slow IVP (IO)

Precautions:
Causes respiratory depression in high doses
have Narcan available

Drug-Drug Interactions:
Additive effects (CNS depression) when given with:
- antihistamines
- antiemetics
- sedatives
- hypnotics
- barbiturates
- alcohol
