Drug Classification:
Antiemetic
Metoclopramide (Reglan)
Mechanism of Action:
Potent central and peripheral dopamine antagonist; sensitizes GI smooth muscle to acetylcholine by direct action leading to increased gastric emptying and intestinal transit without increased secretions

Pharmacokinetics
Onset- 1-3 min IV, 10-15 min IM
Peak- 1-2 hr
Duration- 1-3 hr
½ Life- 2.5-6 hr

Indications & Contraindications
Indications: Severe nausea and vomiting
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity or sulfa allergies
- GI hemorrhage
- Bowel obstruction or perforation

Side Effects/Adverse Reactions:
Drowsiness, fatigue, sedation, mental depression
dizziness, HTN, hypotension,
tachycardia, bradycardia
diarrhea,
dystonic reaction (tree/monster)

Adult & Pedi Dose:
(ADULT) 10-20 mg IM, 10 mg slow IV
(PEDI) 1-2 mg/kg/dose

Precautions:
- Patients with CHF, hypokalemia, renal dysfunction
- dystonic reaction can occur have diphenhydramine available
Metoclopramide (Reglan)
Drug-Drug Interactions:
- Antagonized by anticholinergics
- Potentiated effects with other CNS depressants
