Osmotic diuretic

Mechanism of Action:
Osmotic diuretic that inhibits sodium and water absorption in the kidneys and promotes fluid shift from intracellular to extracellular space

Pharmacokinetics
- Onset of Action = 15 minutes
- Peak Effects = 3-8 hours
- Duration of Effect = Varies
- Half-Life = 100 minutes

Indications/Field Use:
• Acute cerebral edema
• Blood transfusion reactions
Contraindications:
Acute pulmonary edema, severe pulmonary congestion, hypovolemia

Side Effects/Adverse Reactions:
Chills, HA, dizziness, lethargy, N+V
change in mental status, chest pain

Adult & Pedi Dose:
(ADULT): 1.5-2g/kg IV, IO – slow bolus or infusion
(PEDI): 0.25-0.5g/kg IV over 60 min

Precautions:
Rapid administration can cause transient volume overload and CHF
Diuresis can cause sodium depletion
Crystallization begins as temperature approaches 45ºF, always use in-line filter

Drug-Drug Interactions:
Damages RBC’s, do not give with whole blood or
packed RBC’s
