Lipid Metabolism Flashcards
What is tricylglycerol?
It is the most common dietary fat.
Consists of glycerol and fatty acids.
What can fatty acids be used by?
Fatty Acids might be used by skeletal // heart muscle.
It can also be used by ketogenesis to supply acetyl co - enzyme A for brain and muscle.
What is glycerol?
Glycerol is used in gluconeogenosis // glycolysis : provides food for the brain.
Furthermore, it is cleaved by the hormone sensitive lipase.
Why does beta - oxidation occur?
It occurs as it primes fatty acids for reaction by generating fatty acetyl co - enzyme A in cytosol.
This is all oxidised in mitochondria and transported by carnitine.
What are the 4 main reactions in beta oxidation?
- Oxidation
- Hydration // Reduction
- Thiolysis
What are ketone bodies?
These can be used by the brain during starvation or prolonged exercise.
Liver converts fatty acids to acetyl co - enzyme A in excess.
And then the co - enzyme A is converted to ketone bodies.
What is the control for fatty acid synthesis?
The control is acetyl co - enzyme A carboxylase.
This produces an allosteric reaction which is stimulated by citrate.
It is also inhibited by palenitoyl - coA. It’s induced by insulin and repressed by glucagon.
