Lecture 24. Respiratory System Flashcards
What are the classification systems of the respiratory system
structural or functional
Structural:
upper respiratory system
lower respiratory system
Functional:
Conducting
Respiratory
Describe what is present in the upper respiratory system
nose (nasal cavity), para-nasal sinuses, pharynx
Describe what is present in the lower respiratory system
larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs
What is part of the conducting zone, and what is its function
filter, moisturize, thermoregulate air: NOT involved in gas exchange
composes of: nose, paranasal sinus, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles
What is part of the respiratory zone
gas exchange between the air and blood
Composes of: respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, air sacs and alveoli
Where is the respiratory bronchiole?
it is the 23rd branch.
What forms the external bone?
nasal and maxillary bones and cartilages, septal cartilage (sits in the midline, separates left and right nasal cavity) and alar cavities form the archs
What is above the nostrils
vestibule
what forms the roof of the nasal cavity
ethmiod bone
What forms the floor of the nasal cavity
palatine and maxillary bone
what is the function of the chonchae, how many chonchae are there
increase the surface area
there are 3 conchae: superior, middle, inferior
What is the function of the meatus
it is where the paranasal sinuses opens up to - as well as the nasolacrimal duct
What are the para-nasal sinuses
frontal, maxilla, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses
What are the functions of the sinuses
enhance efficiency of voice resonation as well as filtration, humidification
Where does the pharynx start and end
pharynx starts at the base of the skull and ends at the level of C6.
