Q

Why are tattoos permanent even though the skin sheds?

A

Although skin sheds, tattoos remain permanent. This is because the ink of the tattoo penetrates an area deeper than the epidermis, which is the most superficial layer of the skin. The tattoo penetrates the skin and sets in the dermis layer, which is deeper than the epidermis, the part of the skin that sheds. Eventually, skin cells end up dying. When this occurs, the dead skin is replaced by “younger” cells. Due to this, the ink of the tattoo continually travels to younger and younger generations of cells, therefore, remaining in place.

Q

Why do hands dry out easier than the rest of your body especially during the winter months?

A

What causes dry hands is mostly the external elements they’re exposed to. The lack of sebaceous glands across hands – the part of our body responsible for producing sebum, our natural moisture – makes them sensitive to dehydration through exposure.

Q

Why is the bottom layer of the epidermis living?

A

The bottom layer of the epidermis, called the stratum basale or basal layer, is living because it is the primary source of new skin cells. The cells in this layer are actively dividing through mitosis to produce new keratinocytes. As these new cells are made, they push older cells toward the surface of the skin, where they eventually die and become filled with keratin, a protein that helps protect the skin.

Q

Why do scars look different than the rest of the skin and why do all wounds scar?

A

If skin is severely damaged then it may try to heal by forming scar tissue. Scar tissue is not the same as normal skin tissue, it often appears as discolored and lacks sweat glands and hari. Scar tissue is connective tissue and the top layer of your skin is epithelial tissue.
You likely have damaged the hair follicles, melanin, sebaceous and sudoriferous glands in the area where you have a scar as well. Therefore, you will not grow hair, sweat, tan, or produce oil where the scar is on your body.
