Explain Thrasymachus’ claim “Why is the unjust man better off than the just” & Why does Socrates Disagree?

Q

Why does Socrates look for justice in the city & where does he find it?

A

He is trying to enlarge the context and setting in order to simplify where Justice is found within an intricate system. He also uses a city in his example as a way create a blueprint for an IDEAL society, that way justice can be observed comprehensively and systematically.

He finds Justice within the 3 classes: The rulers, guardians, and workers of the city. Socrates concludes that justice is achieved when each class performs its role harmoniously, without overstepping its bounds. This internal balance reflects a just individual, where reason rules over spirit and appetite.

Q

Give 3 examples of Guardians being moderate. Why is this important?

A
  1. Control of Desires
Guardians must control their desires for wealth and luxury.
  2. Courage in Battle
In battle, Guardians must balance courage with prudence. While they need to be brave to protect the city, they must also exercise moderation by not engaging in reckless behavior.
  3. Education and Philosophical Training
Guardians undergo rigorous education to develop their rational faculties and moral character. They learn to prioritize the welfare of the city over their individual desires.

This is important because it allows for the Guardians to be role models to the other citizens in the city and allows for harmony and balance in the city without a sense of chaos that would disrupt the Justice system set out.
