Anatomy II: Blood Vessels Flashcards
What is the role of blood vessels?
Transport blood to tissues (where gases & nutrients are exchanged) and then transport the blood back to the heart.
- also controls BP
- Secretes chemicals
What are chemoreceptors?
They detect blood oxygen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen ion concentration; In aorta and common carotid artery in the neck.
What are baroreceptors and where are they located?
Pressure receptors; In aorta and common carotid artery in the neck.
What is Athereosclerosis?
Leading cause of death - caused by atherosclerotic plaque (lipid, cholesterol, calcium salts, and cellular debris)
Define: Blood Pressure (mm Hg)
Outward pressure that blood exerts on walls of blood vessels.
Where is blood pressure highest and lowest in?
Highest in large systemic arteries and lowest in large systemic veins.
Velocity ____ as cross-sectional area ______.
DECREASES; INCREASES
What is a respiratory pump?
Helps propel blood through thoracic and abdominal cavity veins.
What is inspiration vs expiration in Blood vessels?
Inspiration: Increases venous return to the heart due to negative thoracic pressure.
Expiration: Decreases venous return as thoracic pressure rises, compressing veins.
