Anatomy: Chemistry Flashcards
What is a Molecule?
Two or more atoms of the same ELEMENT join together
What is a Compound?
Two or more atoms of a DIFFERENT element join together
What is the Duet Rule?
States that atoms are most stable when valence electron shell holds TWO electrons.
Ex: two hydrogen atoms with one electron each ion together and they each have/share 2 electrons.
What is an Ionic Bond?
An atom gives away one or more electrons to create stability.
What is a Covalent Bond?
Two atoms share electrons.
Polar vs Non-polar Bonds
Polar means UNEQUAL sharing of electrons while non-polar means EQUAL sharing.
What are Enzymes & what affects its activity?
A protein that accelerates chemical reactions. — Temp, pH level, and substrate concentration.
What are important properties of water?
Carries heat with it when it evaporates, cushions body structures, acts a lubricant between 2 different surfaces within the body.
What are Carbohydrates?
A compound made out of Hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen.
What are Lipids?
Fatty compounds that store energy.
What are Proteins? (and structures)
Large molecules composed of many amino acids.
Primary Structure
Secondary Structure
Tertiary structure
Quaternary structure
What are Nucleic Acids?
Primary information-carrying molecules in cells.
