lymph
clear, colorless, alkaline fluid made mostly up of water, protein, salts, fats, white blood cells, and urea
urea
a waste product of protein metabolism
lymphatic vessels
found alongside other vessels, part of lymphatic system
lymph nodes
commonly called glands, rich in specialized WBC called phagocytes
phagocytes
clean debris from lymph through phagocytosis
superior vena cava
where lymph enters the circulatory system and is combined with blood
where are lymph nodes concentrated?
neck, armpits, groin, and abdomen
tonsils and adenoids
these become swollen when you have a cold or sore throat, happens when nodes become overwhelmed and inflamed
metastasized
spread to another part of the body
thymus gland
Consists of two fused lobes and divided into cortex and and medulla. Cortex is mostly composed of immature T lymphocytes (WBC). Gradually shrinks while we age, plays role in immunity.
spleen
located in LUQ, prenatal development forms RBC and WBC, after birth, it produces RBC in severe need only, continues to produce WBC and antibodies, stores blood and platelets
