Cephalosporins Flashcards
M?
M-Have a B-lactam ring-inhibit enzymes needed for cross-linking peptidoglycans in bacterial cell walls so they weaken and cannot maintain an osmotic gradient
This causes them to swell, lyse and so die
Cephalosporin-new generations more targeted to gram-negative bacteria and less oral activity
Resistant to B-lactamases as they have a dihydrothiazide ring
I?
I-Second and third line for urinary and resp tract infections
Treat complex severe infections that can be caused by anti-biotic resistant organisms.
C?
C-C.diff infections risk, allergy/anaphylaxis, renal impairment, warfarin, aminoglycosides
A?
A-GI upset, anti-biotic associated colitis, hypersensitivity, cross-reactivity with allergic forms, CNS toxicity/seizures
