Activated charcoal Flashcards
M?
Van der waals forces cause adsorption of molecules onto the surface of the charcoal as they travel through the gut.
Useful if poison is ingested
Affinity is determined by ionic status and solubility in water
weakly ionic substances like benzodiazepines adsorb well, but strongly ionic and hydrophobic eg lithium aren’t.
Activated charcoal increases elimination of certain poisons. This is useful for substances adsorbed by charcoal that can readily diffuse back into the gut so many doses can maintain a steep conc gradient so more diffuses out of the gut.
Has a high SA
I?
Reduces absorption of poisons or drugs in overdose in the gut
Increases elimination of poisons from the gut
C?
low consciousness, vomiting, reduced GI motility, prevents absorption of therapeutic drugs
A?
pneumonitis, bronchospasm, airway obstruction , intestinal obs, black stools and vomiting
