Bipolar disorder definition
Characterized by cyclical disturbances in mood, cognition, and behavior either mood-manic, mixed-manic, mixed-depressed, or depressed

Bipolar disorders etiology
-Not known, theories include life events, genetics, neurotransmitter abnormalities and some medical factors such as brain injury, MS, epilepsy
Mania definition
Distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased goal directed activity or energy lasting at least 1 week*** and present most of the day, nearly every day with at least 3 other associated symptoms present
Mania associated symptoms (6)
- Inflated self esteem and grandiosity
- Decreased need for sleep
- Talkative
- Increased goal oriented activity
- Distractibility
- Excessive involvement in activities with high potential of consequence
Hypomania definition
Distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expanisve or irritable mood and abnormally persistently increased activity or energy lasting at least 4 consecutive days*** most of the day

Bipolar I disorder definition

Bipolar II disorder definition
Involves an individual that has never experienced a fully manic episode but meet criteria for hypomanic episodes, episodes associated with an unequivocal change in functioning that is uncharacteristic of the individual when not symptomatic observed by others and not due to other condition
Cyclothymic disorder definition
For 2 years (or 1 in children, before that doesn’t matter) there have been numerous periods with hypomanic symptoms that do not meet criteria for hypomanic episode (3 or less consecutive days) and numerous periods with depressive symptoms that do not meet criteria for major depressive episode (less than 2 weeks), hypomanic and depressive symptoms at least half the time for consecutive months not attributable to other conditions
